Explore the Southern Lakes of New Zealand

Distinction Nugget Point is the ideal base from which to explore the scenery of Fiordland, Arrowtown, Wanaka and the majestic Southern Alps, through to the West Coast. You can travel to any one of our Southern beauties by helicopter, departing from Distinction Nugget Point’s own helicopter pad.

Fiordland: Milford and Doubtful Sound
Fiordland is the perfect region to really relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. With stunning expanses of open spaces, including rugged mountains, crystal clear lakes and farmland, you’ll feel like you’re the only person in the world.

Take a day trip to Milford Sound, one of the eight wonders of the world. Here you can view wildlife, dolphins and seals from a boat cruise in the serene and breathtaking natural setting of Fiordland National Park. Milford Sound showcases the dramatic figure of Mitre Peak (made famous in the Lord of the Ring Trilogy films), and is more easily accessible by road than its neighbour, Doubtful Sound.

Doubtful Sound is the more subdued of the two sounds and offers limited road access. Doubtful Sound is perfect for a laid-back experience, away from other tourists. Due to the remote location, this sound is the quieter of the two during the summer months. Both sounds offer the chance to experience the sounds by water. Take a day cruise for a snap shot of this stunning area or book an overnight cruise for a once in a lifetime experience.

Arrowtown
Arrowtown is a must see for any traveller staying with us at Distinction Nugget Point. Just a 20 minute drive from our boutique Queenstown hotel, Arrowtown is a quaint tourist village, full of historic buildings, boutique shops and steeped with gold mining history. At the height of the Central Otago gold rush, over 7,000 miners camped on the river banks. Arrowtown was one of the few gold mining towns to establish a community after the rush and now is home to around 2,400 residents. Make sure to walk to the end of the shops, up Buckingham Street to marvel at the tiny cottages, built many years ago.

Wanaka
On the shores of Lake Wanaka, 120km north-west of Queenstown, lays Wanaka, a popular holiday destination in both summer and winter. Wanaka makes a great day trip, with a range of great activities to keep you and your family busy. Ride the monster school bus at Cardrona Adventure Park, visit Cinema Paradiso and enjoy a movie from the comfort of a Lazy Boy, couch or even a car, or spend a few hours at Puzzling World, with a 3-D maze, giant kaleidoscope and an illusion room. In winter time Wanaka boasts stunning views of the snowy mountains out over Lake Wanaka and is the perfect base for a skiing or snowboarding holiday at Cardrona or Treble Cone ski parks.
